Palestinian International Driving Permit in Jordan
Last reviewed:
Short answer
Jordan is on our guidance list of countries where the Palestinian International Driving Permit is used. Carry it with your valid Palestinian driving licence and passport. Jordan is a party to the 1949 Geneva road-traffic convention; how long a visitor may drive depends on the stay, so check before you travel.
The legal basis: international road-traffic conventions
Jordan has been a party to the Geneva Convention on Road Traffic since 1960, but not to the 1968 Vienna Convention, which Palestine joined in 2019. In practice, acceptance depends on the instructions of Jordan’s Drivers and Vehicles Licensing Department and on the rental company’s terms.
If you travel via the bridge
Many travellers from the West Bank cross into Jordan via the King Hussein Bridge. Get your IDP before you travel — it is issued in Palestine by the Palestinian Motor Sports and Motorcycles Federation and takes about one working day once your documents are complete.
Make sure your Palestinian licence stays valid for your whole trip — the IDP cannot be used once the local licence has expired.
Renting a car in Jordan
Car-rental companies may ask for the IDP together with your Palestinian licence, passport and a credit card — terms differ by company. Ask the company about its conditions and insurance cover before you book.
Carry both licences together: your valid Palestinian driving licence and the International Driving Permit, plus your passport. The IDP is an official translation of your licence, not a licence on its own.
If you live in Jordan
The IDP is meant for travel and visits, not as a substitute for a local licence if you live there permanently. If you are a resident, check with the Drivers and Vehicles Licensing Department about a Jordanian licence.
How long can you drive in Jordan as a visitor?
How long a visitor may drive on a foreign licence depends on the length of stay and the type of visa. Check with the country’s embassy or official traffic authority before you travel — don’t rely on unofficial websites.

Frequently asked questions
Can I drive in Jordan on a Palestinian licence without an IDP?
It’s best not to rely on that. Rental companies and traffic police may ask for the IDP, which is always carried with your Palestinian licence. Check the current rules before you travel.
Can I request the IDP while I’m in Jordan?
The permit is issued in Palestine. If you are outside Palestine, message us on WhatsApp and we’ll tell you which options fit your case before you apply.
How long is the IDP valid?
One year from the issue date, as long as your Palestinian licence stays valid.
Is the IDP enough on its own to drive in Jordan?
No. The IDP is always carried with your valid Palestinian driving licence; it is never used on its own.
